- Escape Windows Hell Linux Mint is a great OOTB distro for newcomers
- Own Your Phone Again GrapheneOS kicks bigTech out of your phone
- Free E-Books! Project Gutenberg offers free public domain e-books
- Free 3D Printing Files Printables offers an excellent selection of free (and paid sigh) STL and STEP files.
- FMHY FMHY lists many free services from streaming to ai tools. (If you must use ai, at least check out their local options)
- Can’t Do Local AI? If you don’t have the hardware for local ai, and must use ai, at least use DDG’s front end. It provides an abstraction layer (anonymization) for your data and has a “no training” policy in place with model providers (whether that’s respected or not is up to interpretation).
More Ethical Social Media Platforms
Data sovereignty is important. Since I’m Canadian, I’m sharing Canadian instances. The beauty of the Fediverse is you can use any instance, even host your own, and federate with any other instance. So join one of these, or any other instance that fits for you and get off bigTech.
- Mastodon - Twitter Alt Shameless plug for the projectProjects account so you have something to follow!
- Pixelfed - Instagram Alt
- Lemmy - Reddit Alt Did you know a ridiculous amount of content and interaction on reddit is bots and veiled advertising these days? Lemmy feels like old reddit.
Referral Links
These links may generate a small kickback to me at no extra cost if you feel like supporting; usually in a credit on the service.
These are not sponsored to be here. They are services I actually use and recommend personally that happen to offer a referral option
- Canadian Web Hosting
- Filen - FOSS Encrypted Cloud Storage - They sometimes offer lifetime deals which is what I would recommend
